Dear Parents,

Following two of our Scout leaders leaving us for pastures new over the last 12 months, we find ourselves currently struggling to provide additional capacity within the Scout Troop, at a time when we are receiving numerous applications to join 5th Frome.

We are therefore mounting a recruitment drive to recruit additional assistant leaders and/or helpers who can help Ray and Paul run our excellent Troop.

We know from talking with parents like yourself that many adults are attracted to offering some help within Scouting, but never get round to making that first step. We are keen to find you a role that suits you, your time availability and your desire to help young people fulfil their full potential.

Don't worry about never having been a Scout or knowing your reef knot from your bowline as free training will be given as applicable to the role you may wish to take up. Whilst there are a couple of basic mandatory courses  for leaders such as first aid and safeguarding etc.. there is also more hands on training available at district and county level involving  camping and activity skills, which over time allow you to do more with our Scouts both on meeting nights and at our camps. With much of this training now on-line it has never been easier.

Whilst it would be fantastic if you would like to join us as an Assistant Leader, if you are concerned about jumping straight in, why not come along initially as a volunteer helper and see what we do, get involved at our events and talk with the other leaders before deciding what you would like to do next. Of course if you would just like to volunteer as a helper that's absolutely fine as well, as all help is greatly appreciated.

If you, or anybody you know, would wish to come along and join us or want know more about volunteering with 5th Frome, please contact our Scout Leader Ray Marsh on Tel: 07850 872222, or hello@5thfromescouts.org.uk or simply come along to a troop meeting at Selwood School 8-9.30pm

Regards,
David.

Volunteering FAQs
Q. How much time do I need to give, do I have to go everyweek
A regular session usually take approximately 2 hours, one evening per week or even at the weekend. However, Leaders can spend as much or as little time as they like. Scouting offers a flexible volunteering scheme and you do not have to be there every week. Adults often work as a team to support the young people in Scouting.

Q. Do I need to have been a Scout
No! Scout Leaders come in many shapes and sizes, and from a variety of backgrounds. You do not need to have any previous experience within Scouting to take part. You may have skills from other areas of your life that can be applied to volunteering.

Q. Is Scouting inclusive?
Every Scout and Scout Leader is the same. Unique! So we’re always working to make Scouting more inclusive: we always do our best to accommodate volunteers with different requirements or abilities.
Q. What roles are available?
Leader, Assistant Leader, Section Assistant, Occasional helper, Treasurer, Chair and more!

Q. What opportunities are there for volunteers?
Training, adventurous activity permits such as archery, air rifle shooting and powerboating and much more! Scouting is about personal development and this is not only for the young people involved in the association, we want you to have the opportunity to learn new skills and develop yourself!

Q. Will I be supported?
Yes! Volunteers are supported by other volunteers at three different levels, the group, District and county. So no matter what advice or support is needed there is always someone to help out. From the start new leaders are signposted to others in similar positions and above to guide and support them through the process. There are also many opportunities to meet other volunteers in similar positions at district and county events, training and international events.
